Fourth grade is a busy year as students are building their knowledge and putting into practice all the skills they have developed up to this point in their school careers.
In my class, we use the Writer's Workshop approach to help students develop their writing skills. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week, students engage in guided writing to work on refining writing skills. Students are working on developing ideas and including details in their writing.
Math Trailblazer's is the series we use to develop math concepts. Students have studied geometry, measurement, multiplication, number sense, place value, addition, and subtraction. Thinking skills are getting better as we continue through our journey.
We are getting in our third round of Literature Circles. During our first round, everyone read the novel, The War with Grandpa. For our second round, students read a Beverly Cleary novel. This round's books include: Shiloh Season, The Trouble with Tuck, Poppy, and On My Honor. Discussion groups will be held weekly for students to discuss the story so far, pose questions they may have and explore unfamiliar vocabulary. Projects will follow the completion of the novels.
Homework is considered anything which did not get done in class as well as a few assigned skill builders. Students should be reading every day for 30 minutes. Constant reinforcement is the key to success.
