CELEBRATIONS AND SUCCESS

REPORTS

  • Preschool North site &endash; Mashel Tompkins-Forgey shared that Preschool North family activities continue with a performance of Aladdin at the Pantages Theater on March 22, family Art Walk through Tacoma on April 18 and Buck & Elizabeth concert and picnic as well as Reptile Man coming in April and May. Thompson and Spanaway Jr. High families as well as members of the community are invited to these events.
  •
  • Thompson Elementary site &endash; Carrie Ching shared her plan for a possible tutoring program. She distributed attendance reports and explained the different reporting requirements for Boys & Girls Clubs and 21st Century Community Learning Center grants.
  •
  • Spanaway Jr. High site &endash; John Williams shared the SJH site had closed January 28 through February 1 for one week of restructuring and reorganizing. One concern is that most of the junior high students that are registered are not attending. He will send out a survey to all SLC students to complete and return anonymously in order to find out why they are not attending as well as contact parents by phone. His recruitment plan includes a sign-up so students can eat lunch with him. It was brought up and discussed that the staffs at both the SLC and SJH need to work together to create support of the SLC and encourage student participation. It was noted that Thompson staff promote the SLC to students and parents. It would be helpful if SLC staff can attend SJH staff meetings to provide information abut the SLC and answer questions, as a number of misconceptions exist. Next SJH staff meeting is February 26: 6:50 a.m. for 8th & 9th grade staff, 8:30 a.m. for 7th grade staff. Sue Einert will attend.

  • Parkland Spanaway Boys & Girls Club update &endash; Carrie Ching shared that the name has been changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of South Pierce County. Rick Guild, Executive Director of Boys & Girls Clubs, is working with Tom Seigel, Superintendent of Bethel School District, to open clubs in Bethel schools. Sites have not been determined.

  • SLC Adult Community Classes &endash; Adult community classes are very popular! Introduction to Computers and Weight Training classes are full.
